How to Balance Creativity with Business
If you're reading this, I'm guessing that you have a million brilliant ideas and creations swirling around that big brain of yours. You bring to life these elaborate designs, you produce ideas and creations that no one else can mimic, and you LOVE being able to build a business that lets your creativity shine.
But then... there's the admin work. The endless emails, the meticulous planning, the endless tech issues, and the to-do list that never seems to shrink. Not to mention, dozens, hundreds, thousands (high-five to you!) of people who want to connect with you because you've brought them into your world. You might find yourself spending more time on admin than on the creative stuff that lights you up. And that can lead to burnout, frustration, and a whole lot of “Why did I even start this?” moments.
Here’s the thing: you don’t have to do it all. You can actually be a creative genius, and not spend 80 hours a week on your business. You can grow your audience, without being on your email or in your DM's 24/7 (Is it time to delete your email and your social media off your phone?)
How? By mastering the art of balance and learning to let go of the admin stuff that’s stealing your joy and cramping your creative flow.
Here’s how you can start finding your perfect balance:
- Identify Your Core Tasks - These are the things only you can do. The ones that drive your business forward and fuel your energy. Make a list of these and prioritize them.
- Delegate the Rest - Look what's left on your plate and determine what can be handed off to an assistant, team members, or automations. Check out our list 50 Tasks to Assign Your VA to help get your gears turning.
- Set Boundaries - It’s easy to get sucked into admin work, especially when it feels urgent. Set specific times for creative work and admin work, and stick to them. I love using this app (not an affiliate, the app is free!) to help me schedule focus time, social media time (for client work) and then it makes all of my apps available at the end of the day.
- Use Tools - There are so many tools out there designed to make your life easier. From project management apps to social media schedulers, find the ones that work for you and use them to streamline your workflow. Better yet? Have your team streamline your workflow. You probably don't need to be scheduling all of your pins to Pinterest, pass it off!
- Check-in with Yourself - Regularly assess how you’re feeling. Are you feeling overwhelmed or creatively drained? It might be time to adjust your balance and delegate more tasks. Don't set yourself up for failure by giving yourself MORE tasks and collaborations just because you've delegated admin tasks.
Now, we’re not saying you should completely ignore the admin side of things. That would be like trying to build a house without a foundation. But finding the right balance between creativity and administration is key to building a sustainable, thriving business.
And if you ever find yourself asking, “Is this something I should be doing?” Just play a little game of “this or that.” If it doesn’t light you up, it might just be time to hand it off. After all, your creativity deserves the spotlight, not the backburner.
Hope you enjoyed these tips, and remember, the world needs your creativity—don’t let the admin stuff hold you back.
